People who are serving time in correctional facilities have stories to tell not only from the perspective of the perpetrator, but as the victim and witness, as well. These stories are seldom represented in our society and when they are, they are overly dramatized and subsequently diminished. This course invites students who have playback experience to expand their skills in holding and playing back stories which are often perceived as unplayable. It begins with recognizing the perpetrator, victim, and witness in ourselves. Students will have opportunities to challenge their stereotypes of prison life and prisoners, learn distancing techniques to hold difficult stories through art and ritual, and understand the correlation between shame and violence. We will look at how race plays a big part within American prisons and discuss ways in which we can use privilege to address inequality. Invited guests, people who have been incarcerated, will help to inform our learning process, and video examples will illustrate how playback theatre has been used in prison settings. This course is a winner of the 2008 Open Call contest.
Prerequisite: Core Training, or its equivalent
